Sermon Theme
What do you make of Him? Who is Jesus?
To have and live by the wrong answer is to lose all hope of getting into Heaven.
Even to have the right answer but have no relationship with Him is of no use.
KNOWING Him and being RELATED to Him as Him being our ‘Brother’ → eternal life
We have learned so far as to Jesus’ identity..
He ALONE is the prophet promised to Moses to whom everyone has to listen in order to LIVE.
The ONE who is of the line of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the royal line of Judah
The ONLY high priest through whom God has PERFECTLY atoned for all our sins ONCE FOR ALL
We noted most of the world likewise rejects what the Bible says about Jesus as our ONLY prophet and teacher and high priest. “He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” (John 1:10–13, NIV84)
In this sermon we continue learning more about Jesus’ identity as God reveals it in the Bible → Catechism He has been ordained by God the Father and has been anointed with the Holy Spirit to be…our eternal king who governs us by His Word and Spirit, and who guards us and keeps us in the freedom He has won for us. 31 Q. Why is He called "Christ", meaning "anointed"?
A. Because He has been ordained by God the Father and has been anointed with the Holy Spirit to be
our chief prophet and teacher who perfectly reveals to us the secret counsel and will of God for our deliverance;
our only high priest who has set us free by the one sacrifice of His body, and who continually pleads our cause with the Father; and our eternal king who governs us by His Word and Spirit, and who guards us and keeps us in the freedom He has won for us.
Psalm 2 (NIV84)
1Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain?
2The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One.
3“Let us break their chains,” they say, “and throw off their fetters.”
4The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them.
5Then he rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying,
6“I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill.”
7I will proclaim the decree of the Lord: He said to me, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.
8Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.
9You will rule them with an iron scepter; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.”
10Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth.
11Serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling.
Text
Hebrews 2:5–3:6 (NIV84)
5It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking.
6But there is a place where someone has testified: “What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?
7You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor
8and put everything under his feet.” In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is not subject to him. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him.
9But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
10In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering.
11Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers.
12He says, “I will declare your name to my brothers; in the presence of the congregation I will sing your praises.”
13And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again he says, “Here am I, and the children God has given me.”
14Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—
15and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.
16For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants.
17For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.
18Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
1Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess.
2He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house.
3Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself.
4For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.
5Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house, testifying to what would be said in the future.
6But Christ is faithful as a son over God’s house. And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast.
