Under the Radar

To fly ‘under the radar’ is of course a military term.
The Seal Six team helicopters that flew into Pakistan on May 2nd 2011 to get Osama Bin Laden,
arrived UNNOTICED at their destination because they flew so low Pakistani radar did not detect them.

Yet Christians too know how to fly ‘under the radar’
When outnumbered by non-Christians in an unfamiliar context, we might give in to being timid when subjects that require us to make a stand come up in discussion, and worse still, we are are asked for our point of view à silence.

I recall at the end of Year 12 going to my principal for a reference to go to Theological College
His answer I will never forget: “I never knew you were so deeply a committed Christian”.

Yet Jesus calls on us to NOT hide our light under a bushel, but instead hold it up for all to see
““You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14–16, NIV84)

Readings

Acts 2:1–4, 14-21 (NIV84)

1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.

2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.

3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.

4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

14Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.

15These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning!

16No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

17“ ‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

18Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.

19I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.

20The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.

21And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

Text

Hebrews 11:32–12:3 (NIV84)

32And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets,

33who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions,

34quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies.

35Women received back their dead, raised to life again. Others were tortured and refused to be released, so that they might gain a better resurrection.

36Some faced jeers and flogging, while still others were chained and put in prison.

37They were stoned; they were sawed in two; they were put to death by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated—

38the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground.

39These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised.

40God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.

1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

3Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
